Cool not complicated

Tonight’s practice allowed us to revisit a swinging blues number Bob & I wrote last summer called “Cat named Dog.” We also started exploring possibilities with a new tune called “The World is My Church.” It’s meant to be a gritty ditty, keeping the lyrics just ahead of the guitar riff. As Bob explained to us, “it doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be cool.” Taking a ‘less is more’ approach to the whole composition.
When things get over engineered they can lose the simplicity that creates a familiarity and an ease of understanding and access. Sometimes the less complicated option means an easier route to produce, replicate and sustain. As well as creating a more accessible recognition.
Think about the songs that are so easy to learn you know the chorus the very first time you hear it - catchy, catchy!
I tend to be an “over-doer” & appreciate the notion that simplicity and clarity lead to good design. When it comes to the expectation we are setting for ourselves, are we keeping a balance with what would be best received instead of trying to out do ourselves? In Creativity Coaching, we call it “Lightening Up” or lowering your expectations. Not to say you won’t create greatness - just don’t wear yourself out or beat yourself up in the process.

Today I am Thankful for new ideas & inspiration, for the reminder to keep it simple & for how late the sunset is.
What are you Thankful for?
