Discovering our Highest Self

Bob & I met this week for a writing session to continue working on Walking Bag Blues and started building out a new song that has a much more rootsy feel to it. We’ve been referring to it as “Mr Pelican” but on paper, it’s titled “Highest Self.” The melody & lyrics came to me inspired by the Sky & my surroundings but I needed Bob’s input to develop the different sections musically and to create the dynamics. It’s coming together as a super feel good song & I am already imagining our fans singing happily along to it. My favorite scene in any movie about performers or any Live concert footage is when the entire crowd is singing along to their favorite songs - that’s the ultimate connection & highest High that a band can share.

I love seeing people dance, sing, & add to the energy in the room - completely uninhibited and free! It’s the same feeling I interpret that creatures that are in their natural habitats have - perfectly provided for and at ease in their environment. They never seem to disconnect from their Highest Self, why should we?

It makes me feel good knowing how music lifts people up, draws us together & binds us to the present moment. Maybe it causes us to travel back in our memories and evokes sentiment but it can also be what keeps us here, now. Singing along, better yet, dancing along and belting it out is such a sweet lift! When it’s right, it’s what let’s you return all the way to your Self - your Highest Self - the Self who is completely immersed in joy, in surrender to the moment, wrapped up in pure bliss. That’s my favorite feeling of being at a show & on the dance floor twirling around without a care in the world, or in my kitchen with the speakers on blast, depending on what I can get away with. I’ve found that bird watching or even just watching waves roll in, allows me to connect to the same feeling of fully being present in the Now & reconnect to I & I too.
